Murugi – who has a background in Information Technology – remembers how her passion for cooking started when she was a toddler. She would stand in the kitchen watching her mother with keen interest, always curious about what spices were going into the prepared dishes.
After 15 years in the professional services sector, and a decision to branch out on her own, Murugi had an idea; to introduce different snacking options to the Kenyan market. With an abundance of fresh produce, spices and herbs, she saw and seized an opportunity.
Her company YETU produces a range of healthy, all-natural dips, spreads and crisp bread utilizing locally-grown produce. The baked salsa is the biggest seller, but she also produces a lentil and roasted red pepper spread, a rosemary and chilli tahini, toasted lentils, and a mixed herb rub for grilling and roasting.
“It struck me that a majority of the population were still reaching for unhealthy snacks; mandazis, samosas, chapatis – which while delicious, are probably not the best for energy and overall health. I am trying to promote a healthier way to snack; one that is good for you, and tasty too.”
You can find Murugi at the Organic Farmers Market every Saturday at Purdy Arms in Karen.
