The Proof is in the Pudding

OFM is proud to announce the recent addition of Tanzania’s Natural Extracts Industries products, which are distributed in Kenya by Tasleem Bhanjee. Offering vanilla, orange and cacao extract, as well as cacao nibs and powder, NEI’s range is a welcome boost at OFM, giving our customers more options when it comes to cooking with all-natural ingredients.

While NEI is not completely organic, they embrace sustainable agriculture and seek to use natural materials, inputs and ingredients throughout their production process. The company, which was created in 2011, is also on board with the social implications of going organic – their aim is to spur economic development for smallholder farmers, and when possible they employ women to provide them with an alternate income source.

To create their extracts, hand-harvested vanilla pods, orange peels and cacao bean husks are sun-dried and processed at low temperatures, capturing delicate flavours that are sure to bring out the best in your dishes.

There are plenty of recipes where these flavours and cacao products would come in handy, but our favourite – and one for which all the ingredients are available at OFM – is a delicious chocolate avocado pudding. Visit us at Purdy Arms this Saturday from 9am to 3pm and whip some up for a weekend treat!

Chocolate Avocado Pudding


2 medium avocados

1 large orange, juiced

¼ cup cacao powder

¼-½ cup maple syrup

Extract of your choice, to taste


Blend all ingredients together by hand with a whisk until creamy and smooth, or use a food processor for a smoother (and easier) finish.
